COVID Data

The rate of infection in this country continues to be stunning. That groups of protestors and the White House are trying to force the country to "open for business" without widespread testing, a vaccine or effective treatment will kill more Americans, leave more Americans grieving and slow the economic recovery.

Read the NY Times editorial "Trump's Role in the Death Toll" to see graphically why testing is essential to survival. In a nutshell, Mr. Leonhardt states that the US and S. Korea "each had their first confirmed case of coronavirus around Jan 20 ... each had their first death in late February". But "from the beginning, S. Korea took the virus extremely seriously, with widespread testing ...". The graph shows that their program of testing, tracing contacts and quarantining has minimized their death rate.
The US sure is winning the race to have the highest number of cases, most rapid increase in cases and kill the most people per capita. Check out this Reuters article from April 17th: "COVID-19's exponential growth".

Several amazing websites slice and dice the available data in almost any way you would want to view it. The video showing confirmed cases growth by country is astounding. Check them out.

Our World in Data - Coronavirus Disease

Amazing video showing the day-by-day growth of confirmed COVID cases worldwide. Notice the immense surge in cases in the US starting in mid-March.

Models from the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) are being used to forecast deaths and utilization of hospital resources. Their model assumes "strong social distancing measures and other protective measures" - which is not the case in many locations. Many states and municipalities issued social distancing orders weeks ago. Many, including the populous state of Florida, refuse to do so. Thus the magnitude of the reality will likely exceed these projections.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee issued his stay at home order on Monday, 31 Mar 2020. Memphis Mayor Strickland declared a civil emergency and closed all the bars, gyms, etc. on March 19th. Since then, there have been more closings and a "Safer at Home" order on Mar 24th. Compliance in Memphis has been suboptimal.
